Martin Luther King Jr. was a prominent civil rights leader that fought for the rights of Black and African American citizens of the United States in the 1950s to 1960s. He worked with other civil rights leaders, such as Representative John Lewis and James Farmer to plan and organize peaceful protests around the country. The most famous being, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” Speech (shown below). He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, by known convict James Earl Gray. In 1983 President Ronald Reagan announced that the third Monday in January would be celebrated in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. 5 Little Known Facts about Martin Luther King Jr.
