HistoryHispanic/Latinx Heritage Week was established in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, which was later extended to last a thirty days as of August 17, 1988. The month celebrates the history, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic/Latinx Americans. The first day of this celebration marks the anniversary of independence for El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Roberto ClementeRoberto Clemente was an outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates and was the first Latin-American player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. After his death, the Commissioner's Award was renamed the Roberto Clemente Award in his honor. It is given to a player who shows exemplary community involvement and sportsmanship. Dolores Huerta91 year old leader of multiple movements (labor leader in the 1960s, feminist figure in the 1970s, and more), Huerta advocates for the youth to raise their voices on topics and to be active in prevalent issues in the country. Today, the Dolores Huerta Foundation trains community organizers for equality. Frida KahloFrida Kahlo was a famous artist born in the early 1900's. Her father was of German- Hungarian decent while her mother was of Spanish and Native American decent. From a young age she was interested in artwork, with the specific medium being paint. After suffering a life threatening accident as a young adult, Kahlo dove deeply into her work. Using her talents as a way to explore her identity through self expression, she became forever known. |
Lin-Manuel MirandaLin-Manuel Miranda is an actor, singer, composer, writer, rapper, and producer. His parents immigrated to the US from Puerto Rico. Miranda wrote his first musical, In The Heights, during his sophomore year at Wesleyan University, showcasing the cultures of Washington Heights, where he grew up. He also wrote the infamous musical, Hamilton. This is a hip-hop musical following the story of Alexander Hamilton and the cast is almost entirely people of color. Over the years Miranda has won numerous awards including an Emmy, Grammy, and a Tony. |
